Murphy Plant Ltd Adds 25 JCB Site Dumpers To Company’s Fleet; 6T-1 and 9T-1 Models Included
With operator comfort and safety serving as primary motivators, plant operator Murphy Plant Ltd—a part of London-based J. Murphy & Sons Limited, itself a global engineering and construction company with operations in the UK, Ireland, and Canada—recently took delivery of 25 new JCB site dumpers. The addition of 15 JCB 6T-1 swivel-tip and 10 9T-1 front-tip site dumpers pushes Murphy Plant’s existing JCB fleet to 100-plus machines, including JCB Fastrac tractors, backhoe loaders, Loadall telescopic handlers, wheeled excavators, and rough-terrain forklifts. Murphy Plant acquired its new site dumpers from Greenshields JCB, a dealer Murphy Plant has worked with for six-plus decades.
With Safety In Mind
Murphy Plant added the new site dumpers as part of an ongoing fleet-renewal programme. It will use the 6T-1 and 9T-1 machines (members of a JCB lineup of 1- to 9-tonne-capacity site dumpers spanning five weight classes) for various projects in the power, natural resources, water, transport, and construction sectors for various clients. Mike Carpenter, Murphy Plant managing director, says Murphy Plant conducted considerable research into the “fast-moving dumper market” before selecting the JCB models.
Carpenter says JCB’s Sitesafe cab—a ROPS/FOPS (rollover protective structure/falling-object protective structure) Level II cab with reinforced frame and impact-protective front screen—was a chief driver in Murphy Plant’s decision to make the purchase. The cab, he says, puts the “operator in a safer space throughout operation.” Additionally, Murphy specified reversing and forward-facing cameras for its machines to enhance the safety of others on jobsites. “The new dumpers have been extremely well received within Murphy so far,” he says. “They have replaced a longstanding incumbent, but we’ve only received positive comments from our projects to date.”
The 6T-1 & 9T-1 Up Close
Designed and manufactured in-house by JCB, the 6T-1 and 9T-1 both include a 74-horsepower JCB EcoMAX four-cylinder engine that meets European Union Stage IIIB Final emissions standards without a DPF (diesel particulate filter) or exhaust aftertreatment solution required. Both models also feature a four-speed permanent 4WD power shuttle transmission.
While the 6T-1 has a 6,000-kilogram payload capacity and 4,900- to 5,470-kilogram operating weight depending on ROPS/FOPS and cab choices, the 9T-1 has a 9,000-kilogram payload capacity and 5,460- to 5,800-kilogram unladen weight. Murphy Plant’s maintenance team also puts the JCB LiveLink telematics system to use, with the company noting the system has been useful “in circumstances that have required security team involvement.”
